A lot of small businesses are fired by passion and personal stories – but we weren’t expecting for this little gem when we were filming at Highdown vineyard just outside Littlehampton for a video about suppliers to Pallant of Arundel.
Aly Englefield – who runs the vineyard with her husband Paul – revealed that one of her best-sellers, Mother’s Share wine, was inspired by her own mother who died just weeks after they bought the business.
“We were talking about both of our mothers being like angels looking after us and protecting us. The French describe as the wine that evaporates from the barrel that then gets topped up as the angel’s share and it occurred  to me that she is an angel and I just have to top up the barrel for some to go up to her – that way both our mother’s would get their share.”
Aly says her Mother was very proud of her opening the business but didn’t get a chance to try her wine. So creating a wine in her memory is a great comfort.
“She sits up there on her cloud and is waiting for her share, unquestionably.”
Cheers to all our Mum’s who continue to inspire us. Watch Aly’s story here.
